The ban of Belarusian national flag in Poland has been appealed

14.10.2011

Belarusian fan Ihar Shchekarevich appealed to the Polish prosecutor’s office for its decision to ban Belarusian national flag on sporting events in Poland.

Shchekarevich: “I appealed to the prosecutor’s decision.  Andrew Zhukovets and Ukrainian Center “Collaboration without borders” helped me in this. But I do not think that Polish prosecutors admitted their mistake and consider my appeal positively. However, I am willing to go through all the possible instances including the judiciary, in order to defend the right to support Belarusian teams in Poland under our national flag.

Using Belarusian national flag at sporting events in Poland is unacceptable. This follows from the answer to the declaration of a crime against a group of Belarusian basketball fans at the match Belarus-Lithuania in Bydgoszcz.

The incident occurred on June 25, 2011 during the match of women’s European basketball championship in Bydgoszcz. Belarus played against Lithuania. Guards of the stadium, which hosted the game, prevented a group of Belarusian fans to deploy white-red-white flags, and then rudely removed Belarusians from the stadium.
